Replacement
1. Worn driveshaft CV joints must be replaced as they cannot be repaired. If the car's mileage has exceeded 80,000 km, the manufacturers recommend replacing the drive shaft itself along with the worn CV joints.
2. Remove the drive shaft as described in Chapter 2, then loosen the metal fastening strip and remove the rubber protective boot from the worn CV joint.
3. Using special pliers, open the retaining ring that secures the CV joint to the drive shaft (see illustration).
4. Using a mallet, carefully knock the CV joint off the drive shaft (see illustration).
5. Make sure the new CV joint is fitted with a retaining ring and install the joint onto the drive shaft with a mallet so that the retaining ring fits into the appropriate groove.
6. Fill the CV joint with grease specified in Specifications type.
7. If necessary, install the rubber boot on the new CV joint as described in chapter 5.
8. Install the drive shaft as described in Chapter 2.
