Removal

Brakes with manual adjustment (up to 8/83)

In principle, all the pads of one suspension need to be changed, even if only one pad is worn out or clogged.

Remove the brake drum.



Remove the brake shoe return spring using a suitable collet, such as HAZET No.797.

For sedan model only

Press the brake pads outward and remove the pressure rod.

Remove the lower brake shoe spring.

Disconnect the handbrake cable from the brake shoe lever.

Remove both brake pads.

For station wagon model only

Compress the brake shoe retaining clips using a collet and install them into the holes in the brake shield.



Press the brake shoe retaining clips completely through the holes in the brake shield.



Press the brake pads outward and remove the pressure rod.

Remove the lower brake shoe spring.

Disconnect the handbrake cable from the brake shoe lever.

Installation

In principle, brake shoes of the same quality should be used. If possible, blow compressed air onto the brake drum and brake shield.

When the brake shoes are removed, do not press the brake pedal, otherwise the piston will fall out of the wheel cylinder. If the cylinder is leaking, it should be repaired. If the brake drum has grooves, it should be ground down.

Before installing the brake pads, apply a thin layer of grease (OPEL ET No.1942586/90166282) to the brake shield in the area where the brake pads are in contact.

Only for gray model

Connect the handbrake cable to the brake shoe lever.

Install the brake pads into the retaining springs.

Install the push rod.

Install the lower brake shoe spring.

Using a collet, install the brake shoe return spring.

For station wagon model only

In this way, install the brake pads on the brake shield so that the brake pads themselves fit against the piston of the wheel brake cylinder.





Pass the new brake shoe retaining clip through the hole in the brake shoe and the brake shield. Ensure that the retaining clip is positioned correctly.

Connect the handbrake cable to the brake shoe lever on which the brake shoes are installed, making sure that the cable is routed correctly.

Install the push rod.

Install the lower brake shoe spring.

Install the brake shoe return spring using a collet.

Install the brake drum and secure the lock screw.

Install the rear wheels, follow the marks.

Adjust the foot brake system, adjust the hand brake.

Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts crosswise to 90 Nm.
