Replacing the front wheel hub (Opel Astra J)

The front wheel hub is a non-separable unit, so if the hub bearing fails, replace the hub.

Note: If the bearing of one of the hubs fails, we recommend replacing both front wheel hubs at the same time.


You will need: a 18 mm wrench, a 32 mm socket head.

1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle. Remove the wheel.

2. Loosen the hub nut.

Note: The hub nut is tightened to a very high torque. To loosen, secure the hub with a tire iron (or a small crowbar), resting it on the wheel mounting nuts screwed onto the studs, as shown in the photo for point 2.

3. Completely unscrew the hub nut and remove it.

4. Remove the front wheel brake caliper assembly (see Replacing the front wheel brake caliper), without disconnecting the brake hose, and secure it with wire, preventing the hose from twisting or being pulled.

If it is difficult to remove the hub from the outer joint tailpiece, carefully, without damaging the threads, knock it out of the hub with a hammer through a drift or a wooden block of a suitable size.

Inspect and replace the mudguard if damaged.

8. Install the removed parts in the reverse order of removal.

9. Check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment angles. Use the services of workshops with special equipment.
