Sedan and Hatchback Models
Examination
During the operation of the pump, a characteristic noise is heard coming from the rear of the car when the ignition is turned on. If the engine is stopped, the fuel pump also turns off after about a second. If the pump noise is excessive, this can be explained by its faulty condition.
If the pump does not turn on at all, check the wiring to the pump, fuse and relay.
Special equipment is required to check the operation of the pump, so it is recommended that if there is any sign of damage to the pump, contact a car repair specialist.
Removing
On models with single point fuel injection, relieve pressure in the fuel system by removing the fuel pump relay (see chapter 12) and cranking the engine with the starter for about 5 seconds.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Siphon the remaining fuel in the tank through the filler neck into a clean metal container.
Tilt the rear seat cushion forward.
Lift the carpet panel off the floor so that the plastic fuel pump cover is visible.
Using a lever, carefully lift the plastic cover off the floor to gain access to the fuel pump.
Disconnect the wire connector to the pump.
Loosen the clamp and carefully disconnect the fuel hose from the top of the pump. Be careful, there may be a leak, so take fire precautions. Clamp the hose to prevent leakage and dirt from entering the system.
Remove the six bolts and washers, carefully pull the pump out of the fuel tank. Be careful.
If required, the fuel pump can be detached from the assembly as a whole for replacement, as indicated below.
Remove the fuel filter from the bottom of the pump.
Loosen the clamp and disconnect the fuel hose from the top of the pump.
Note the location of the two pump wires for later installation, then use a soldering iron to unsolder the two wires from the top of the pump.
Carefully remove the pump from the rubber mounting sleeve.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
After removing the pump from the unit, check that the wires are securely soldered to the appropriate pump pins during assembly.
Inspect the underside of the filter for significant contamination or blockage and replace if necessary.
Replace pump gasket.
Thoroughly clean dirt from pump bolt threads and apply appropriate sealant prior to installation.
