Hydraulic valve lifters — replacement (Opel Zafira A)

The necessity of performing this operation should be determined during the inspection of the technical condition of the engine (see "Engine - technical condition check").

To complete the work you will need a magnet.

Sequence of execution

1. Prepare the car for work (see "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").

2. Remove the rear timing belt cover (see "Camshaft Seals - Replacement").

Note: The camshaft bearing caps must be installed in their original locations. To facilitate the installation process, the caps are numbered: on top - on 1.8 DOHC engines, or on the side - on 1.4 and 1.6 DOHC engines.

The bearing caps of the intake shaft are numbered from 1 to 5, and the exhaust shaft - from 6 to 10. The numbering starts from the camshaft pulleys.

4. Remove the camshafts.

5. If the hydraulic tappets are not removed for replacement, mark their serial numbers.



6. Using a magnet, remove the hydraulic tappets from the mounting holes.



7. To prevent dirt from getting inside the hydraulic tappets and causing them to fail, lay the tappets out on a clean sheet of paper.

8. Install the hydraulic tappets in the reverse order.

Recommendation: Before installation, dip each hydraulic tappet into a container with fresh engine oil. Press the compensator valve several times until air bubbles stop escaping to fill its internal cavity with oil.

9. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap mounting bolts to the specified torque (see Fig. "Reference data") in the order specified.
