Note: The work is shown on the Astra model. On the Zafira model it is done similarly.
Sequence of execution
1. Make sure that the steering column locking lever is raised up to the stop. Trying to move the steering wheel in the vertical plane and along the steering shaft axis, check the reliability of the steering column fastening by the locking mechanism. If the steering column moves, it is necessary to adjust the locking mechanism or replace the steering column assembly.
2. To check for play in the steering, turn the steering wheel to the position corresponding to driving straight ahead. Place a flat-blade screwdriver on the instrument panel so that its blade is located next to the steering wheel rim. Turn the steering wheel to the left until the wheels start to turn (choosing backlash), and then to the right and, centering on the blade of a screwdriver, mark these positions on the iodine with wire, chalk or some other method. The play should not exceed 5° or 18 mm when measured on the outer part of the rim.
Note: Increased play indicates the need to find and fix the problem. As a rule, the first thing to fail in the steering system is the tie rod ends. It is also possible that the steering gear has become loose or needs to be replaced (see "Steering gear - removal and installation").
3. To check for play in the tie rod ends, place your hand on the tie rod end connection with the steering knuckle so that your palm touches them simultaneously. The assistant gently rocks the steering wheel from side to side. If play is detected in the tie rod end, you will feel a shift in the steering knuckle relative to the rod.
4. Check the tightening of the lock nuts of the steering rod ends, if necessary, tighten them to the prescribed torque (see "Reference data").
5. To check for play in the steering rod joints, feel the joints through the covers and ask an assistant to rock the steering wheel from side to side. If play appears, the steering rod must be replaced.
6. Repeat the check on the other side of the car. Replace faulty tips and steering rods (see "Tie Rod End - Replacement", "Steering rod - replacement").
7. Check the tightening of the nuts and bolts securing the steering gear, and if necessary, tighten them to the specified torque (see "Reference data").
8. While rocking the steering wheel from side to side, listen to the operation of the steering mechanism. A knock indicates the need to replace the steering mechanism (see "Steering gear - removal and installation").
9. The assistant starts the engine and turns the steering wheel first in one direction, then in the other. Listen to the operation of the power steering pump. The pump should work smoothly and quietly. If extraneous sounds appear, (grinding, creaking) the pump needs to be replaced (see "Power Steering Pump - Replacement"). If the steering wheel sticks a little when turning, it is necessary to bleed the power steering system (see "Power Steering System - Bleeding").

10. Inspect the hoses and pipes of the power steering system and their connections. If there are any leaks, replace the seals of the connections or the hoses and pipes themselves.
