Comment. The performance of the work is shown on the example of the Astra model. On the Zafira model, it is performed similarly.
Execution sequence
1. We make sure that the steering column fixation lever is raised up to the stop. Trying to move the steering wheel in a vertical plane and along the axis of the steering shaft, we check the reliability of the fastening of the steering column by the locking mechanism. If the steering column moves, adjust the locking mechanism or replace the steering column assembly.
2. To check the play in the steering, turn the steering wheel to the position corresponding to driving straight. We lay a slotted screwdriver on the instrument panel so that its blade is located next to the steering wheel rim. Turn the steering wheel to the left until the wheels turn (choosing backlash), and then to the right and, centering on the blade of a screwdriver, with a wire, stranded or otherwise mark these positions on the iodine. The play must not exceed 5°or 18 mm when measured along the outside of the rim.
Comment. Increased play indicates the need for troubleshooting. As a rule, first of all, the tie rod ends fail in the steering. It is also possible that the steering gear is loose or needs to be replaced (see «Steering gear - removal and installation»).
3. To check the absence of play in the tie rod ends, put your hand on the junction of the tie rod with the steering knuckle so that the palm touches them at the same time. The assistant shakes the steering wheel slightly from side to side. At «In the event of play in the tie rod end, a displacement of the steering knuckle relative to the rod will be felt.
4. Check the tightening of the locknuts of the tie rod ends, if necessary, tighten them to the prescribed torque (see «Reference data»).
5. To check the absence of play in the steering rod joints, we feel for the hinges through the covers and ask the assistant to shake the steering wheel from side to side. If there is play, the tie rod must be replaced.
6. We repeat the check on the other side of the car. We replace defective tips and steering rods (see «Tie Rod End - Replacement», «Tie rod - replacement»).
7. We check the tightness of the nuts and bolts of the steering mechanism, if necessary, tighten them to the prescribed torque (see «Reference data»).
8. When rocking the steering wheel from side to side, we listen to the operation of the steering mechanism. Knocking indicates the need to replace the steering gear (see «Steering gear - removal and installation»).
9. The assistant starts the engine and rotates the steering wheel first in one direction, then in the other. We listen to the work of the power steering pump. The pump must run smoothly and quietly. When extraneous sounds appear (creaks, creaks) pump needs to be replaced (see «Power steering pump - replacement»). If the steering wheel sticks a little when turning, it is necessary to bleed the power steering system (see «Power Steering System - Bleeding»).
10. We inspect the hoses and pipelines of the power steering system and their connections. In the presence of leaks, we replace the seals of the joints or the hoses and pipelines themselves.
