Attention! Replacing the lever switches is described in Chapter 8.
Removing
Attention! Installation will require a riveting gun and new rivets.
1. Remove the central console (relevant section), then move the driving mode selector lever to the P position.
2. Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on axle stands.
3. Pull out the mounting bracket and separate the driving mode selector rod from the base of the lever. Do not lose the pivot arm.
4. Loosen and remove the mounting nuts and bolt, then remove the front and rear brackets for the rear HVAC duct. Detach the air duct and move it away from the driving mode selection lever.
5. Disconnect the harness connector from the lever mode switch and unfasten the harness so that it can be removed with the lever. On late models where the lever is equipped with a latch, remove the latch switch and ignition key release switch as described in Chapter 8.
6. Carefully drill out the heads of the rivets securing the arm mounting plate to the floor, then move the arm out of position. Remove Seal (where available), installed between the casing and the floor.
7. Inspect drive select lever mechanism for damage and signs of wear, and replace worn components.
Installation
8. Make sure that the contact surfaces of the arm mounting plate and the floor are clean and dry. Where a seal has been installed between them, check its condition, then place it on the floor. Where such a seal has not been made, apply a thin layer of sealant to the contact surface of the mounting plate.
9. Place the lever assembly in working position. Attach the lever with new rivets using a riveting gun.
10. Make sure the lever mode switch wiring is routed correctly, then connect the connector. Where necessary, install the latch switch and ignition key release switch as described in Chapter 8.
11. Attach the rear air duct of the interior heating / ventilation system with brackets to the working position, then install its brackets and securely tighten their nuts / bolt.
12. Install the central console (see related section).
13. Install the pivot bushing, then connect the shift rod to the transmission operating lever and attach it with a bracket.
14. Check the action of the driving mode switching rod and, if necessary, adjust it as described in Chapter 3. When finished, lower the car to the ground.
