Contents: Removal ⬇ Installation ⬇
Caution! Replacing the lever switches is described in Chapter 8.

Removal

Please note: Installation will require a rivet gun and new rivets.

1. Remove the central console (relevant section), then move the drive mode selector lever to position P.

2. Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the car and support it on axle stands.

3. Pull out the retaining clip and separate the shift rod from the lever base. Be careful not to lose the lever pivot bushing.

4. Loosen and remove the mounting nuts and bolt, then remove the front and rear brackets of the rear heating/ventilation duct. Unclip the duct and move it away from the drive mode selector lever.

5. Disconnect the harness connector from the shifter mode switch and unclip the harness so that it can be removed with the shifter. On later models where the shifter has a latch, remove the latch switch and ignition key release switch as described in Chapter 8.

6. Carefully drill out the heads of the rivets securing the lever mounting plate to the floor, then remove the lever from its operating position. Remove the seal (where is available), installed between the casing and the floor.

7. Inspect the shift lever mechanism for damage or wear and replace any worn components.

Installation

8. Make sure that the contact surfaces of the lever mounting plate and the floor are clean and dry. Where a seal was installed between them, check its condition, then place it on the floor. Where there was no such seal, apply a thin layer of sealant to the contact surface of the mounting plate.

9. Install the lever assembly into the working position. Attach the lever with new rivets using a rivet gun.

10. Make sure the lever mode switch wiring is correct, then connect the connector. Where necessary, install the latch switch and ignition key release switch as described in Chapter 8.

11. Secure the rear HVAC duct into position with brackets, then install its brackets and tighten its nuts/bolt securely.

12. Install the central control (see the relevant section).

13. Install the pivot bushing, then connect the shift rod to the transmission operating lever and secure it with a bracket.

14. Check the operation of the mode selector rod and, if necessary, adjust it as described in Chapter 3. When finished, lower the car to the ground.
