Cardan shaft flange seal
Attention! A new flange O-ring and mounting nut will be required.
1. Proceed as described in Section 8, unfasten the front end of the propeller shaft from the transmission flange and remove the vibration damper (where available). If necessary, to facilitate access to the flange, remove the shaft completely.
2. To block the shaft when the nut is loosened, make two pieces of steel strip (one long, one short) forked tool, fastening them with a bolt and nut.
3. Lock the flange, then loosen and remove the retaining nut from the end of the transmission output shaft. Remove the tool and remove the flange together with the O-ring. Discard the nut and o-ring - they must be replaced.
4. Note the depth of the oil seal in the transmission case, then gently pry it out using a large flat screwdriver.
5. Check the propeller shaft flange sealing surface for damage and signs of wear. If any, replace the flange.
6. Clean the area around the gland opening, then apply a small amount of grease to the outer sealing lip of the new gland.
7. Position the stuffing box with the sealing lip inward and install it to the previously measured depth using a suitable seat that rests only on the hard outer lip of the seal.
8. Install a new O-ring on the flange, then lubricate it with a small amount of gear oil. Carefully place the flange in its operating position, being careful not to damage the sealing lip of the gland. Install a new nut and tighten it with the tightening torque specified specifications.
9. Install the cardan shaft as described in Section 8.
10. Drive a short drive, then check the transmission fluid level (see related section).

11. Remove the drive mode select lever position sensor as described in Chapter 8.
12. Using a small flathead screwdriver, carefully pry the gland out of the housing, then remove it from the shaft.
13. Clean the area around the gland opening, then apply a small amount of grease to the outer sealing lip of the new gland.
14. Rotate the stuffing box with the sealing lip inward and install it into position using a suitable seat, which should rest only on the hard outer lip of the seal.
15. Install the drive mode select lever position sensor as described in Chapter 8.
