General description (Opel Omega A)

The installed mechanical gearbox has five speeds with a synchronizer on all gears, including reverse. All gears, including the intermediate reverse gear pinion, are in constant engagement with the positioning gears. The gear is engaged by engaging the corresponding gear with the secondary shaft by sliding synchronizer clutches. When the gear is engaged, the synchronizer rings compare the speed of the secondary shaft with the speed of the selected gear to ensure smooth engagement.

The automatic transmission is a four-speed transmission. In 4th gear, the torque converter is locked by the internal clutch, thus eliminating any slipping. With the selection lever in the Drive (D) position, it is possible to select the three- or four-speed sequence by pressing a button on the lever. It is also possible to select "1" and "2" speeds separately. The transmission contains a conventional kickdown facility to provide greater acceleration on all gears, but in addition the kickdown facility can be activated separately by the fuel control pedal to shift from 4th to 3rd gear.
