Warning: Conventional ignition pulse type tachometer cannot be used on diesel engines.
1. Using a diesel tachometer, measure the maximum engine speed and compare it with the data given in the Specifications.
2. If adjustment is necessary, remove the air filter tube. Loosen the locknut on the idle speed adjusting screw and turn the screw clockwise to increase speed or counterclockwise to decrease it. Tighten the locknut without changing the position of the screw (see illustrations). Install the handset.
High pressure fuel pump Bosch VE
3. The Bosch VE fuel pump requires a modified idle speed adjustment procedure. A later pump can be identified by the vertical idle speed adjusting screw located on the front of the pump. Where this type of pump is installed, it is essential that the stop screw of the engine speed control lever is not disturbed. Adjustment screw positions shown (see illustration).
4. To adjust the speed, loosen the jam nut on the idle speed adjusting screw and turn the screw as needed to achieve the speed specification. Tighten the locknut without changing the position of the screw.
Fuel pump
5. The idle speed on engines equipped with a Lucas/CAV pump can be adjusted with the appropriate adjusting screw (see illustration). The stop screw of the engine speed control lever must not be disturbed.
6. To adjust the idle speed, loosen the jam nut on the idle speed adjusting screw and turn the screw as needed to achieve the desired idle speed (see specs). Tighten the locknut without changing the position of the screw.
