Removing
Engage gear, apply handbrake. Loosen the castellated nut on the drive shaft.
Attention: The car must be on supports. Otherwise danger of an accident.
Loosen the wheel bolts, raise the car.
Wheel removed.
Knock off the protective caps with a chisel from the brake caliper bolts.
Unscrew the brake caliper from the steering knuckle and hang it to the body on a wire.
Attention: Do not unscrew the brake hose. The braking system remains closed.
Loosen the castellated nuts of the tie rod joint and unscrew them (since August 1981 self-locking nuts have been used). Remove the tie rod joint using a conventional puller.
Remove the safety clips from the control arm ball joint, unscrew the castellated nut. Remove the ball joint using a conventional puller.
Pull the drive shaft out of the front wheel hub by hand. If this is not possible, press it out with a conventional wheel hub puller. Suspend the drive shaft with a wire on the body.
Open the engine crankcase and unscrew the suspension strut from the upper support (arrow) and take it down.
Installation
Insert the post and fasten with new self-locking nuts to 30 Nm.
Lubricate the gear teeth of the drive shaft with gear oil.
Insert the drive shaft into the gearing of the wheel hub.
Caution: Use a new washer and castle nut. Screw the castle nut onto the shaft.
Insert the ball joint from below into the lever and tighten the castellated nut to 75 Nm. If the cotter pin does not fit, tighten the nut further and cotter pin.
Insert the tie rod ball and tighten with a new self-locking nut to 60 Nm.
Screw in brake caliper to 95 Nm.
Caution: First clean the bolts and apply Loctite 262 to them. Then put new protective caps on the caliper bolts. See fig. higher.
Screw on the wheel, lower the car.
Tighten the handbrake. Enable transmission.
Secure drive shaft with new washer and castle nut to 100 Nm. Then loosen the nut and tighten again with 20 Nm. In this position, put the wrench on the castle nut and tighten but 90° (1/4 turn).
Caution: If the cotter pin does not fit, the nut should be loosened, not tightened.
Pin the nut.
Tighten wheel bolts crosswise to 90 Nm.
