Brake system — general information (Opel Kadett D)

The hydraulic brake system consists of a master brake cylinder, front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The brake system is divided into two circuits that act diagonally. One circuit acts on the front right and rear left wheel. The second on the front left and rear right wheel. Due to this, if one of the circuits fails, one front wheel and the opposite rear wheel brake. Pressure in both circuits is supplied from the master brake cylinder when the brake pedal is pressed.

Brake fluid is supplied to the master cylinder from a reservoir located at the front of the engine compartment. The handbrake acts via a cable drive on the brake shoes of the rear wheels.

The brake regulator, built into the brake system, serves to ensure that the rear wheels do not lock when braking under varying vehicle loads. All work with the brake regulator must be performed in specialized workshops.

When cleaning the brake system, asbestos-containing dust is formed. This dust is dangerous to health. Therefore, when cleaning, especially when bleeding the brake system, pay attention not to inhale brake dust. It is recommended to use only special OPEL pads.

Work with the brake system requires cleanliness and precise actions. If the necessary skills are absent, then the work should be carried out in a specialized workshop.

Note: On a very wet road from rain, while driving, you should press the brake pedal from time to time to clean the brake discs.

Due to centrifugal force, water flows off the brake discs, but a thin film of silicone, grease and dirt particles remains, which worsens the brakes. After installing new brake pads, you need to press the brake pedal several times while driving.



During the first 200 km, if possible, avoid making a complete stop or sudden braking.
