Note: Remove the cylinder head only when the engine is cold.
Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals.
Remove the air filter.
Drain the coolant by disconnecting the inlet hose from the thermostat housing and the outlet hose from the water pump housing.
On cars with carburetor engines, disconnect the fuel supply hose from the carburetor, disconnect the air and throttle valve drive cables from the engine, or only the throttle valve drive cable, depending on the carburetor model.
On vehicles with fuel-injected engines, remove the air duct connecting the intake manifold and the throttle body. Disconnect the air damper drive cable from the engine. Disconnect the pipes, hoses and electrical wires from the cylinder head.
Disconnect the heating hoses and vacuum hoses from the intake manifold, disconnect the wires from the coolant temperature sensor.
Disconnect the wires from the spark plugs.
Remove the front protective cover of the camshaft drive toothed belt and, turning the crankshaft, set the piston of the 1st cylinder to TDC at the end of the compression stroke. In this case, depending on the engine model, the mark on the camshaft toothed pulley should be opposite the mark on the rear protective cover of the toothed belt or the mark on the camshaft bearing housing



Remove the ignition distributor sensor.
Remove the coolant hose mounting bracket from the intake manifold.
Remove the alternator drive belt.
Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
Loosen the tension of the timing belt by turning the water pump housing and remove the timing belt.
Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts by ¼ turn, and then by ½ turn in the reverse order of their tightening (see photo).

Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the camshaft bearing housing.
Make a device (see photo) for fixing the valve rockers and remove the cylinder head. If it is not possible to make this device, before removing the cylinder head, remove the rocker arms, rocker arm guides and valve tappets and mark them so that when installing the head, they can be put back in their original places.

Remove the cylinder head gasket and disconnect the outlet hose from the water pump.
