The seat belt tensioner is installed in the front seats. It ensures that the seat belt fits tightly to the person's body in the event of a frontal collision of the vehicle and prevents the person from sliding under the belt. When the tensioner is triggered, the pre-compressed spring (force accumulator) (1) pulls the belt buckle down 80 mm via the cable (2) and the reverse lock (3). This reduces the free play of the seat belts by approximately 80 mm.

Pyrotechnic seat belt tensioner (models from 09.1996.)

In the event of an accident, the SRS control unit ignites a squib installed in the tensioner. The gases generated in this process move a piston in the tensioner tube forward. The piston is connected by a cable to the belt buckle. The buckle moves downwards and reduces the free play of the seat belts by approximately 80 mm.

The activation of the belt tensioner is accompanied by the SRS indicator lamp lighting up. In addition, the activation of the tensioner is determined by the yellow tongue in the belt buckle on the side facing the seat. After activation, the belts function as usual.
