Mechanical belt tensioner (models from 03.1993 to 08.1996)
The seat belt tensioner is installed in the front seats. It provides a snug fit of the seat belt to the body of a person in a frontal collision of a car and prevents a person from slipping under the belt. The device is triggered in the event of a head-on collision and a deviation of the torso by 30 deg., as well as when braking with a load of at least 6G.
When the tensioner is actuated, the pre-compressed spring (force accumulator) (1) pulls through rope (2) and reverse lock (3) belt buckle 80mm down. This reduces the free play of the seat belts by approx 80 mm.
Mechanical Tensioner Components
1 - Accumulator of effort
2 - cable
3 - Backstop
Pretensioner operation is indicated by the yellow tab in the seat belt buckle on the side facing the seat. Once the pretensioner has been deployed, the seat belts function normally.
The tensioner is maintenance free. After operation, it must be replaced as a set.
Before disposing of a non-actuated tensioner, it is necessary to forcibly ensure its operation (service station work). To prevent unintentional actuation of the tensioner during any work on the front seats and before removing them, it is imperative to attach a plastic safety plug to the power accumulator.
Pyrotechnic belt tensioner (models from 09.1996 y.)
In the event of an accident, the SRS control unit ignites a squib mounted in the tensioner. The resulting gases move forward the piston in the tensioner tube. The piston is connected by a cable to the belt lock. The buckle moves down and the free play of the seat belts is reduced by approx 80 mm.
The operation of the belt tensioner is accompanied by the ignition of the SRS warning lamp. In addition, the tensioner is activated by the yellow tab in the seat belt buckle on the side facing the seat. Once triggered, the belts function normally.
The tensioner does not require maintenance. After operation, it must be replaced as a set.
Before disposing of a non-actuated tensioner, it is necessary to forcibly ensure its operation (service station work). To prevent involuntary operation of the tensioner and airbag and to ensure the safety of operation, it is necessary to follow the rules listed in Section Precautions for handling the emergency seat belt pretensioner and side airbag.
