The particulate filter is designed to clean the exhaust gases from soot. Soot particles accumulate in the filter over time during vehicle operation. With the help of a differential control sensor, the pressure of the exhaust gases is measured before and after the filter. At a certain pressure difference, the engine management system automatically regenerates (cleaning) filter - while the car is moving, by changing the amount of injected fuel, the temperature of the exhaust gases passing through the particulate filter rises to 600°C, which leads to the combustion of soot particles. If the filter is too dirty, the engine preheat control lamp lights up on the instrument panel (see chapter «Controls and methods of operation»). The regeneration process can take up to 15 minutes and is usually not felt by the driver.
