The brakes have a dual-circuit hydraulic drive, each circuit controlling the brakes of the diagonal wheels.

Braking of the front wheels is provided by a single-piston caliper. On some cars the rear brakes are drum brakes, with automatic adjustment of the gap between the shoes and drums by extending the spacer.

Zafira models without ABS are equipped with a rear brake metering valve.

Most of the cars under consideration are equipped with an ABS system. If the system is in good working order, the control lamp on the instrument panel goes out after a short period of time necessary for self-diagnosis. The ABS system is designed to improve the controllability and stability of the car during sudden braking by monitoring the pressure in the hydraulic drive line of each wheel. When the system devices are triggered during sudden braking, the wheels are released. ABS consists of wheel speed sensors, an electronic control unit and a valve block.

The ABS system devices are mounted between the master cylinder and the wheel brakes. If the ABS system indicator lamp on the instrument panel does not go out for a long time, or continues to glow continuously, contact a car service center. It is prohibited to repair and adjust the system units yourself

Some 1.8 and 2.0 liter vehicles are equipped with a TS system for touch control of the front drive wheels' grip on the road surface (improved ABS system). In case of weakening of wheel grip (for example, in case of slippage) the system provides braking of the front wheels.
