Checking the technical condition of the exhaust system must be carried out at each maintenance, as well as with an increase in the noise level from the engine. To perform the work, a viewing ditch or overpass is required.
1. We check the absence of cracks, delaminations, dents, foci of strong (through) corrosion on the elements of the exhaust system.
An increase in noise can cause leaks in the elements or seals of the system (it is usually easy to detect by black soot on leaking elements), destruction of the internal partitions of the mufflers (when the engine is running, a faulty muffler will be heard increased noise), catalytic converter destruction (at the same time, an uneven rattle of a high tone is heard). chatter (comparable in frequency to valve knocking), heard at a low crankshaft speed with increasing load, indicates the need to replace the exhaust manifold gasket (see «Exhaust manifold - gasket replacement»). In addition to the destruction of the filler of the neutralizer, it is possible «sintering» honeycomb filler. This reduces engine power. It is possible to check the condition of the catalyst filler only after it has been removed. Damage to the catalytic converter may be accompanied by the glow of the engine control system malfunction indicator lamp (see «Engine management system - condition check»). Defective elements of the exhaust system must be replaced (see relevant sections). Banding or welding is often not possible or has no effect, and therefore can only be considered as a temporary measure.
2. We check the condition of the suspension pads of the exhaust system elements for breaks, cracks and scuffs. Defective suspension pads increase the load on the elements of the exhaust system, which can accelerate their failure.
