Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals.
Remove the air filter.
Loosen the exhaust manifold mounting stud nuts and separate it from the cylinder head.
Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the water pump, disconnect the outlet hose from the thermostat, unscrew the cylinder block drain plug located at the rear of the generator, and drain the coolant into a container.
Disconnect the crankcase exhaust pipe, throttle and air valve drive cables from the carburetor and remove the carburetor.
Remove the intake manifold.
Disconnect the engine cooling and interior heating system hoses from the cylinder head.
Loosen the generator mounting bolts, loosen the generator drive belt tension and remove the belt.
Remove the cylinder head cover.
Loosen the rocker arm adjusting nuts enough to allow the pushrods to be removed.
Before crushing the cylinder head, remove the rocker arms to prevent them from falling into the oil pan.
Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts in the reverse order of tightening.
Remove the cylinder head together with the water pump and its gasket. If work on the head is required, the water pump must be removed.
Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block.
