Diesel fuel system — general description (Opel Kadett D)

            0

The fuel system includes the fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel pump with injectors and fuel filter.

The fuel tank is located at the rear under the rear seat. The current fuel level is indicated by a special indicator. The tank is ventilated by a ventilation system. If the tank is empty, air removal from the system is not necessary, as it is performed automatically during starting.

Caution: If the fuel system is not automatically bled, or if a hand pump is not available, the following steps must be taken:
  • Fill the fuel filter with diesel fuel.
  • Tow the vehicle.

These measures allow rapid removal of air.

Note: To check if fuel is being supplied to the injectors in case of starting difficulties, unscrew the union nuts on two injectors and start the engine without preheating until fuel comes out on the union nuts. Tighten the union nuts and start the engine in the normal way.

Driving in winter

Additives to diesel fuel should not be used, they are needed only in winter. With a decrease in outside temperature, the fluidity of diesel fuel decreases due to the release of paraffin. Diesel fuel becomes viscous like honey. Therefore, in winter, companies mix special additives into diesel fuel, which restore the fluidity of the fuel and guarantee movement at temperatures down to about -15°C. However, these additives do not always guarantee trouble-free operation, which is why it is necessary to add gasoline to diesel fuel, also if there is still "summer diesel" fuel in the tank.

Addition should be made, if possible, before the paraffin begins to settle, otherwise it will be necessary to clear the filter and pipelines of thickened diesel fuel.

Since the admixture of regular gasoline reduces engine power, it is necessary to add the required amount of admixture very precisely (see table).

FuelAir temperature°C
from 0 to -9-10 to -14-15 to -25
summer diesel80%70%50%
normal gasoline20%30%50%
winter diesel100%100%70%
normal gasoline--30%

Note: Use only regular gasoline for adding, not super gasoline.

Due to the easy flammability of gasoline, it is necessary to mix only in the fuel tank. In this case, if possible, first pour in normal gasoline, and then diesel fuel.

Note: Adding regular gasoline will reduce engine power.

If the engine stalls in extreme cold due to frozen fuel, it can be very difficult to start the engine again.

The following options are offered:
  • Remove the fuel filter and heat it in water until the diesel fuel is fluid again.
  • Remove the fuel filter and replace it with a new one.
  • Tow the vehicle to a garage and warm it up.
  • Spray the fuel injection device with hot water.

Caution: Never heat the fuel injection system or fuel tank with a blowtorch or similar. Risk of explosion.
