Note.
- Use only clean, fresh power steering fluid of the specified type.
- Hoses that touch the subframe, body or engine can cause extraneous noise. Make sure that all hoses do not touch other parts of the vehicle.
- Loose connectors may not leak, but will allow air to enter the system. Make sure all connectors are securely tightened.
Pumping
Attention. The power steering pump must not run dry. Do not reuse drained steering fluid.
1. Turn off the ignition.
2. Fill the expansion tank of the power steering to the MAX mark and leave the cap removed.
3. Start the engine and start topping up fluid immediately to prevent the level from falling below the MIN·mark.
4. Slowly turn the steering wheel 2-3 times approximately 45°to the left and right with the engine running, and then twice from lock to lock, holding the end position for approximately 10 seconds.
5. Stop the engine and check the power steering fluid level again. It must correspond to the MAX mark.
Note. Thoroughly remove all traces of power steering fluid. Air escaping from the system during bleeding can cause fluid to slosh out of the reservoir.
6. Turning the steering wheel, check the constancy of the level of the working fluid. It should not contain air bubbles. If bubbles are found, check the tightness of all connections and repeat the test.
7. Start the engine at idle and correct the level of the working fluid in the tank again. Install tank cover.
8. Center the steering wheel and let the engine run for two minutes.
9. Turning the steering wheel in different directions, check:
- Smooth rotation.
- Absence of extraneous noise.
- Working fluid level.
- No leaks.
- Fluid condition (no bubbles, foam or discoloration).
10. If you find any problems, refer to the section «Special states».
Special states
Liquid
The liquid must be free of bubbles and foam. The presence of bubbles indicates loose connections or damage to the O-rings on the pressure or outlet hoses.
Fluid discoloration (milky, opaque or light yellowish brown): Switch off the ignition and wait two minutes. Check hose connections. Repeat steps 8-9 of the previous section and, if nothing has changed, check for the following possible causes:
- Return hose clamps.
- O-ring for return hose.
- O-ring for the supply hose.
- Steering gear line sealing ring.
Prime the system and repeat the bleeding procedure. Verify that the problem has been corrected.
Noises
Whining or groaning sounds from the power steering pump.
With the engine running, check for possible contact between the hoses and the subframe, body or engine. If no contacts are found, apply one of the following methods to cool the process fluid and repressurize the system.
Method 1 - normal cooling:
1. Turn off the engine.
2. Wait for the system to cool down.
3. Install the expansion tank cap.
Method 2 - Partial Fluid Change:
1. Turn off the engine.
2. Using a syringe, remove liquid from the expansion tank.
3. Fill reservoir with cool, clean liquid.
4. Install the expansion tank cap.
After cooling the working fluid, start the engine and warm up to operating temperature. If the noise continues, replace the power steering pump with a new one.
