Steering column replacement (Opel Insignia A)

            0

Attention.

Set the vehicle wheels to the straight-ahead position, then lock the steering wheel relative to the steering column to prevent rotation. Locking the steering column prevents possible damage and malfunctions in the airbag system. The steering wheel must be locked before removing the following components:
  • Steering column.
  • Steering shaft couplings.
  • Intermediate shaft(s).

After disconnecting these components, do not turn the steering wheel or move the front wheels of the vehicle. Failure to do so may result in the contact disc becoming misaligned and, as a result, damage to the contact disc during further driving of the vehicle. If there is a suspicion that the contact disc is not centered, it is necessary to perform the contact disc centering procedure (see Chapter "Passive safety").

Once the steering column is removed from the vehicle, it is very susceptible to damage. Dropping the steering column can cause the steering shaft to break or the plastic inserts that provide rigidity to the steering column to become loose. Incorrect placement of the steering column for transportation or storage can cause deformation of its mounting brackets. Any of the above damages will adversely affect the functionality of the steering column. If it is necessary to remove the steering wheel, only use pullers designed for this purpose. Under no circumstances should a hammer be used to remove the steering shaft, as this will damage the plastic inserts that provide rigidity to the steering column.

1. Disconnect the battery.

2. Remove the lower trim of the left part of the instrument panel.

3. Remove the lower steering column trim.

4. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear.

5. Loosen the four bolts (1) securing the steering column.

Note.
  • Replace bolts with new ones after each removal.
  • Tightening torque: 22 Nm.

Tightening torque: 22 Nm.

6. Remove the steering column (2).

7. If necessary, disconnect all electrical connectors.

8. If necessary, reinstall the components from the old steering column to the new one.

9. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

10. After installation, it is necessary to center the steering wheel angle sensor (see chapter "Brake system").
