Attention: When driving without a trailer, the ball joint must be dismantled! The installation dimensions of the tow hitch are given in Specifications.
With the appropriate configuration at the factory, the vehicle is equipped with a towing device with a removable ball joint.
On Station wagon models, the ball joint is stored in a pouch in the luggage compartment under the luggage compartment lid and is secured with a special fastening strap (see illustration 32.1). On the Hatchback model, the ball joint is secured with a tie-down strap in the spare wheel well (see Section 17).
To mount the ball joint, you must:
- First release the connector and fold it down (see illustration 32.2);
- Remove the plugs from the seat for the ball joint and put them in the luggage compartment, remove the ball joint from the luggage box, remove the cover;
- Check the position of the setting marks - the red mark on the rotary handle of the latch should be directed towards the white marking on the ball joint - while there should be a gap of about 6 mm between the rotary knob and the ball joint, insert a special key (see illustration 32.3) into the latch handle - it must be in position 1.
- If these conditions are not met, it is necessary to clamp the ball joint before installation in the coupling housing (see illustration 32.4), turn the key to position 1, pull out the lock handle and turn it in the extended position to the right as far as it will go;
- Insert the ball joint into the mounting socket and force it upward until it locks - the rotary handle returns to its original position on its own and rests against the ball joint.
- Move the key to position 2 and remove it, press the protective tab in place - after the ball joint is closed, the rotary handle of the latch is not pulled out.
Caution: To avoid injury, do not touch the rotary handle when inserting the ball joint!
When correctly installed, the green mark on the rotary handle of the latch should be directed towards the white mark on the ball joint, the rotary knob should fit snugly against the ball joint, the ball joint must be securely fixed without displacement in the mounting socket.
Attention: Driving with a trailer is only allowed with a properly installed ball joint.
If the trailer is equipped with a brake system. attach the safety rope to the eyelet (see illustration 32.5). To dismantle the ball joint, you must:
- Insert the special key into the rotary handle of the latch and move it to position 1;
- Pull out the rotary handle and turn it in the extended position to the right as far as it will go;
- Pull the ball joint down from the mounting socket and place it in the storage compartment in the trunk;
- Install plugs and close the connector.
Attention: It is unacceptable to clean the ball joint by blowing with hot steam or other high pressure devices!
