Four- or five-speed gearbox type "F16" with synchronizers on all forward gears. On cars with engine "16S" depending on the modification a 4- or 5-speed gearbox is installed. Cars with engines "18E", "18SE", "20NE", "C20NE", "20SEH" are equipped with a 5-speed gearbox. Gear shifting is performed by a system of rods from a lever on the body floor tunnel. The gearbox is combined into a single unit with a differential and final drive. The gearbox housing does not have a drain plug, since the oil is filled for the entire service life of the car. The capacity of the 4-speed gearbox housing is 2.0 l, 5-speed gearbox - 2.1 l of transmission oil of viscosity class SAE 80 for highly loaded parts. Every 30,000 km or every two years of operation, check the oil level, which should reach the lower edge of the inspection hole located in the left rear part of the gearbox housing. Oil is added through the ventilation hole in the gearshift mechanism cover.

The 5-speed gearbox type "F20" is installed on cars with the engine "20XE", which is a modification of the 5-speed gearbox type "F16". The main differences between the gearbox type "F20" and the gearbox type "F16" are as follows:
  • the gearbox housing and gear shift drive have been reinforced;
  • gear ratios have been changed to suit engine characteristics;
  • noise-insulating clutch housing covers, differential cover and gearbox rear cover, made of aluminum alloy by die-casting, are used;
  • a synchronizer for the first and second gears with three locking rings is used (the design and operating principle of this synchronizer are given in the section "Gearboxes of types "F10" and "F13") and a synchronizer for the third and fourth gears of a reinforced design;
  • secondary shaft ball bearing retaining ring has been eliminated;
  • the gearbox housing filling capacity is 1.8 l.

Marking

The gearbox code number is stamped on the rear cover. For example, 26412... 374, where
  • 264 — ordinal number of the day of the year;
  • 1 - the last digit of the year of manufacture;
  • 2 — shift number that assembled the gearbox (1 — morning shift; 2 - evening shift);
  • ... — a place for applying special codes from 0 to 99;
  • 374 — final drive ratio. In this example, 3.74.

Differential

The differential box rotates on two tapered roller bearings. The bearing preload is adjusted with a nut.
