Removal and installation of a 16-valve engine (Opel Kadett E)

Note: The engine is removed only if it needs to be completely overhauled or the crankshaft needs to be replaced.

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

Remove the air filter.

Remove the hood.

Disconnect the supply hoses from the radiator and thermostat, then the hose from the water pump and drain the coolant.



Disconnect the outlet hose from the radiator. Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the expansion tank and heater. Remove the radiator.

Disconnect the coolant hose from the heater and the vacuum hose from the intake manifold.

The alternator drive belt and the power steering pump drive belt are shining (if it is installed).

On carburetor engines, depending on the carburetor model, disconnect the air and throttle valve drive cables or just the throttle valve drive cable. Disconnect the fuel supply hose from the fuel pump and the fuel drain hose from the carburetor.

On engines with a fuel injection system, disconnect the throttle body drive cable, disconnect the fuel supply hose from the distribution line and the fuel drain hose from the pressure regulator.

Disconnect the wires from the electrical components installed on the engine.



Hook the engine.

Raise the front of the vehicle and place it on stands.

Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold and from the bracket on the gearbox.

Disconnect the front wheel drive shafts from the gearbox.

On vehicles with a manual transmission, unscrew the input shaft plug on the rear cover of the transmission, remove the retaining ring, unscrew the bolt from the rear end of the input shaft and completely remove the shaft from the hole in the rear flange of the crankshaft using a puller.

Loosen the engine mount bracket mounting bolts.

Remove the generator.

On vehicles with a manual transmission, remove the clutch housing cover and unscrew the lower bolts securing the clutch housing to the engine. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, unscrew the lower bolts securing the torque converter to the engine block.

Place a jack under the gearbox housing.

Loosen the upper bolts securing the clutch housing or torque converter to the engine block.

Raise the engine and remove it from the engine compartment.

The engine is installed in the reverse order of removal.

In this case, install the primary shaft of the gearbox in place, as indicated in the section "Clutch".

Fill the cooling system with liquid. After installing the engine, start the engine, warm it up to operating temperature, make sure the hoses and pipelines are tight, and check the engine adjustment.
