On heavily used vehicles (taxi, rental) this check should be carried out annually, under normal operating conditions it will be sufficient to perform it once every two years. The check consists in testing the engine management system using a diagnostic scanner connected to the DLC diagnostic connector (see chapter Engine electrical equipment). During the diagnostic process, OBD II trouble codes are read from the ECM memory. Due to the need to use special expensive equipment, this kind of diagnostics is usually carried out in a service station. The composition of exhaust gases is monitored using a special gas analyzer and is usually included in the number of regular checks carried out when the car passes the state inspection. If desired, this check can be carried out at most service stations.
