Removal
1. Set the gearshift lever to neutral. Raise and support the front of the vehicle.
2. Disconnect the front end of the propeller shaft from the gearbox and remove the shock absorber.

3. Remove the shift rod (indicated by the arrow) gear shift mechanism.

4. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the transmission fluid tubes from the hoses.

5. Secure the hoses as shown in the figure.
6. Disconnect the wire from the gearbox output shaft sensor.
2.0 liter engines
7. On SOHC engines, disconnect the wire from the ignition distributor. Remove the distributor bracket bolts and remove the distributor.
8. Disconnect the oxygen sensor wire from the transmission.
9. Remove the front exhaust pipe bracket bolt and separate the front section from the intermediate section.
10. Remove the engine and gearbox brackets. Remove the torque converter lower cover.
11. Remove the oil pan cover to access the bolts that connect the torque converter to the drive plate.
12. Remove the bolts connecting the torque converter and the drive disk.

13. Place a jack under the gearbox.

14. Remove the bolts securing the rear crossmember of the gearbox to the body.
15. Lower the transmission slightly and disconnect the transmission breather hose.
16. Disconnect the position switch wire from the shift lever connector.

17. Disconnect the wires attached to the gearbox housing.
18. Remove the bolts securing the gearbox to the engine.
19. Disconnect the gearbox from the engine.
20. Lower the gearbox using a jack.
2.5 and 3.0 liter engines
21. Remove both front exhaust pipes.

22. Remove the oil pan cover.

23. Remove the bolts connecting the torque converter and the drive disk.

24. If necessary, lock the drive disk using a screwdriver.
25. Remove the gearbox as described in pp.13–20.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

Check that the torque converter is fully seated in its place, the distance (X) should be 15 mm.
