1. Under normal operating conditions, the battery should be fully charged by the alternator.
2. Charging from an external power source may be useful for restoring a dead battery.
3. The state of charge of the battery is easily determined by an indicator called «magic eye», built-in on the top surface of the battery (Pic. 12.1). If the indicator is green, the battery is charged. If the color changes to darker and eventually black, the battery needs to be recharged. If the indicator is yellow, this indicates that the electrolyte level is below normal and the battery should be replaced.
4. Disconnect both wires or, best of all, remove the battery.
5. Charging current (in A) should not exceed a tenth of the battery capacity (in Ah). Make sure the voltage is set to 12V.
6. Connect the charger to the battery, observing the correct polarity (+ to +, and - to -), then turn it on. Switch off the circuit before disconnecting the charger. If the battery is equipped with a 'magic eye' indicator, shake the battery periodically to determine the state of charge.
7. It is not recommended to use the fast charge mode, as there is a risk of battery rupture due to the rapid formation of gases inside the battery.
