The vehicle is equipped with a 12V electrical system with a negative ground terminal. Electricity is generated by a belt-driven generator from the crankshaft pulley. The acid-type battery provides power to start the engine and for periods of time when the electrical load exceeds the amperage supplied by the generator.
As with most automotive electrical systems, most components receive their electrical power through wires and return via a ground loop through the body structure or other metal structure instead of the wire. This must be taken into account when identifying damage: loose or corroded connections have the same effect as a broken wire.
