Checking the axial play of the crankshaft
1. Place a dial indicator on the end of the crankshaft.
2. Carefully move the crankshaft back and forth in the axial direction to determine the axial play of the crankshaft.
3. Make sure that the value of the axial play of the crankshaft does not exceed the set value.
4. If end play is too high, check crankshaft thrust bearings and crankshaft thrust surfaces for wear and/or excessive runout.
5. If necessary, replace thrust bearings or crankshaft.
Removing the crankshaft
1. Unscrew the eight side bolts (1, 2) crankshaft bearing caps.
2. Loosen the eight outer bolts (3) crankshaft bearing caps.
3. Loosen eight internal bolts (4) crankshaft bearing caps.
4. Remove the crankshaft main bearing caps using the DT 8390270 chipper (1) and puller EN 41818 (2).
5. Using both hands, pull the crankshaft up out of the cylinder block.
6. Place the crankshaft in a safe place.
7. Remove the key from the front of the crankshaft.
Removal of loose leaves of main bearings of a cranked shaft
1. Prepare a piece of cardboard or similar, numbered 1 to 4, to mark the crankshaft main bearing shells. The main journals of the crankshaft are numbered starting from the front of the engine.
2. To take the top loose leaves of radical bearings of a cranked shaft from the block of cylinders. Pay attention to the position of the thrust bearing (1) on the third root support (2).
3. Place the upper main bearing shells on a piece of cardboard in the correct order. Pay attention to the fact that the bearing of the third journal is also thrust.
4. To take the lower loose leaves of a cranked shaft from covers of bearings.
5. Place the lower main bearing shells on a piece of cardboard in the correct order.
