The tensioner is triggered in the event of a frontal impact when negative acceleration (slowdown) six times or more the acceleration of gravity. Less severe impacts, including rear impacts, do not trigger it.
Once the system is activated, a pre-compressed spring tensions the seat belt around the driver or passenger in the vehicle via a cable. The belt can move up to 80 mm.
For safety reasons, any work on the belt tensioner should be left to specialists (fig. 11.40).
