Starter — technical condition check (Opel Zafira A)

            0

Note: You can check the electrical part of the starter without disassembling it.

To perform the work you will need a multimeter. We perform the work with an assistant.

Sequence of execution

1. Check if the battery is charged (see "Battery - Maintenance"). If necessary, we charge it.

2. Check the connection of the wires to the starter terminals. If necessary, clean the contacts and treat them with a special conductive grease.

3. Check the electrical circuits of the starter power supply (see "Checking and repairing electrical circuits").

4. Remove the starter (see "Starter - removal and installation").

Warning: When performing the test, do not short-circuit the positive battery terminal wire tip to the starter housing.

5. Connect the negative terminal of the battery to the starter housing with one wire. Connect the second wire, connected to the positive terminal of the battery, to the contact bolt 3 of the retractor relay, to which the starter wire is connected. If the starter anchor starts to rotate, then the starter electric motor is in good condition. Otherwise, the brush assembly or anchor is faulty.

6. Connect the wire connected to the positive terminal of the battery to the contact bolt 1 of the retractor relay. Using a screwdriver or other suitable metal object, short-circuit terminal 2 and contact bolt 1 of the retractor relay. If a loud click is heard and the starter anchor begins to rotate, the retractor relay is working properly. If the relay does not work or works but the starter motor does not begin to rotate, the relay must be replaced (see "Solenoid Relay - Replacement").

7. When the solenoid relay is triggered, the drive should move along the starter shaft. If this does not happen, the drive lever is faulty. Contact a specialized workshop for repairs.

8. To check the overrunning clutch of the drive, use a screwdriver to rotate the gear in different directions. In this case, in one direction the gear should rotate together with the shaft, and in the other direction - separately from it (the shaft remains stationary). Otherwise, the drive must be replaced. To replace the drive, the starter must be disassembled (see "Starter - disassembly and assembly").
