Comment. You can check the electrical part of the starter without disassembling it.
You will need a multimeter to do the job. We work with an assistant.
Execution sequence
1. Check if the battery is charged (see «Battery - Service»). We charge it if necessary.
2. Check the connection of the wires to the starter terminals. If necessary, we clean the contacts and treat them with a special conductive grease.
3. Check the starter power circuits (see «Checking and repairing electrical circuits»).
4. Remove the starter (see «Starter - removal and installation»).
Warning! When checking, do not short-circuit the tip of the wire connected to the positive terminal of the battery to the starter housing.
5. With one wire, we connect the negative terminal of the battery to the starter housing. The second wire, connected to the positive terminal of the battery, is connected to the contact bolt 3 of the solenoid relay, to which the starter wire is connected. If the starter armature begins to rotate, then the starter motor is good. Otherwise, the brush assembly or armature is faulty.
6. We connect the wire connected to the positive terminal of the battery to the contact bolt 1 of the solenoid relay. Using a screwdriver or other suitable metal object, we close terminal 2 and contact bolt 1 of the solenoid relay. If a loud click is heard and the starter armature begins to rotate, the retractor relay is working properly. If the relay fails to operate or operates but the starter motor does not turn, the relay must be replaced (see «Solenoid relay - replacement»).
7. When the solenoid relay is activated, the drive should move along the starter shaft. If this does not happen, the drive lever is faulty. For repairs, contact a specialist workshop.
8. To check the overrunning clutch of the drive with a screwdriver, rotate the gear in different directions. In this case, the gear must rotate in one direction with the shaft, and in the other direction separately from it (shaft remains stationary). Otherwise, the drive must be replaced. To replace the drive, you must disassemble the starter (see «Starter - disassembly and assembly»).
