Depending on the year of manufacture and configuration, various generators can be installed. This section discusses two different generators. In general, their design and mounting methods are similar, but there are minor differences, which are displayed below. Using the generalized information on these generators, you can perform similar operations on any generator installed specifically on your car, even if it differs from those described in this book.
The generator is driven by a V-ribbed belt from the crankshaft pulley. The belt tension is carried out by an automatic tensioner.
Details of the generator of a car with a 1.6 DOHC engine manufactured after 2000:
1 - protective cover;
2 - rear cover assembly with stator;
3 - front cover;
4 - a pulley with a torsional vibration damper.
The alternator is a hard-to-remove structure, so if it malfunctions, contact a specialist workshop or replace the complete alternator. This chapter describes only those operations that do not require special skills and equipment.
Details of the generator of a car with a 1.8 DOHC engine manufactured before 2000:
1 - pulley;
2 - front cover;
3 - stator;
4 - back cover;
5 - protective cover.
Recommendation. If the battery indicator light on the instrument panel lights up, do not rush to immediately remove the generator for repair or replacement. First make sure it's defective (see «Generator - check without removing it from the car»).
