Depending on the year of manufacture and configuration, different generators can be installed. This section examines two different generators. In general, their design and mounting methods are similar, but there are minor differences, which are shown below. Using the generalized information on these generators, you can perform similar operations on any generator installed on your car, even if it differs from those described in this book.
The generator is driven by a poly-V belt from the crankshaft pulley. The belt is tensioned by an automatic tensioner.
Generator parts for a car with a 1.6 DOHC engine produced after 2000:
1 - protective cover;
2 - rear cover assembled with stator;
3 - front cover;
4 - pulley with torsional vibration damper.
The generator is a difficult-to-disassemble structure, so if it malfunctions, contact a specialized workshop or replace the generator assembly. This chapter describes only those operations that do not require special skills and equipment.
Generator parts for a car with a 1.8 DOHC engine manufactured before 2000:
1 - pulley;
2 - front cover;
3 - stator;
4 - back cover;
5 - protective cover.
Recommendation: If the battery charge indicator light on the instrument panel lights up, do not rush to remove the generator for repair or replacement. First, make sure it is faulty (see "Generator - testing without removing from the car").
