Comment. This section shows the repair of a three-stud type internal joint. On some cars, an internal ball-type hinge is installed. In this case, its repair is carried out similarly to the repair of the external hinge (see «External hinge of the drive - removal, replacement of a protective cover and installation»).
Complete with a CV joint or as part of its repair kit, all parts that need to be replaced during the operation are usually supplied; if not, these parts need to be purchased separately:
- grease for CV joints in the required amount (120-140 g for a ball joint and 195-215 g for a three-pin joint);
- new hinge cover;
- hinge retaining ring;
- new clamps for securing the protective cover.
To complete the work you will need:
- special pliers for installing clamps for fastening CV joints, pliers or side cutters;
- outer snap ring remover.
Removing
1. Remove the drive assembly (see «Front wheel drive - removal and installation»).
2. Using pliers with narrow jaws, remove the outer clamp of the protective cover.
3. Remove the outer part of the hinge.
4. Using a puller for the outer circlips, open the circlip.
5. Remove the inner part of the hinge from the drive shaft.
6. Using side cutters, cut the inner clamp and remove it. If you need to save the clamp, you can remove it in another way (see «Actuator Outer Hinge - Removing, Replacing Protective Boot, and Installing»).
7. Remove the cover from the drive shaft.
Installation
1. If an old hinge is to be used, wash it in kerosene, wipe it with a clean cloth and let it dry.
2. In order not to damage the new cover during installation, we wrap the splines of the shaft with insulating tape.
3. We put a new protective cover on the shaft so that the small sealing belt of the cover fits into the groove of the shaft, remove the insulating tape.
4. Lubricate the shaft splines with a special grease for CV joints.
5. We put the hinge on the drive shaft.
6. With the help of a puller for the outer circlips, we open the circlip and put it on the drive shaft, while controlling the entry of the circlip into the groove of the shaft.
7. Fill the inner and outer parts of the hinge with grease (see «Reference data») for joints of equal angular velocities and put a little grease in a protective cover.
8. Install the outer part of the hinge.
9. Lifting the sealing belt of small diameter with a slotted screwdriver, we release air from the internal cavity of the cover.
10. Install the large and small clamps of the protective cover. Using special pliers for installing clamps or side cutters, we tighten the clamps of the protective cover (see «Actuator Outer Hinge - Removing, Replacing Protective Boot, and Installing»). Clamps are installed taking into account the direction of rotation of the drive. The outer end of the clamps must point in the direction opposite to the forward rotation of the drive.
11. Install the drive assembly on the car (see «Front wheel drive - removal and installation»).
