Checking the electric fan and its electrical circuits (Opel Zafira A)

Depending on the nature of the electric fan malfunction, the sequence of testing and the range of elements to be tested vary.

Therefore, the troubleshooting sequence is given for three typical cases of malfunctions, from which you choose your particular case.

To complete the work you will need:
  • multimeter;
  • wires with a cross-section of about 2.5 mm²;
  • 30A fuses.

The electric fan does not work at any speed

1. Prepare the car for work (see "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").

2. Check fuse F2 (see "Fuse and relay mounting blocks"). We replace the blown fuse. If the fuse blows again, it means there is a short circuit in the wiring of the electric fan (see "Checking and repairing electrical circuits") or short circuit of the fan motor (see below).

3. Disconnect the air conditioning system electric fan wires from the additional resistor (see below).

4. Using wire segments, connect one of the wires of the electric fan to the negative terminal, to the "ground", and the second to the positive terminal of the 12 V power source (for example, with a battery). A 30 A fuse must be inserted into the section of wire connecting to the positive terminal (see "Checking and repairing electrical circuits").

A working electric fan will start working, if not, the fan motor needs to be replaced (see below). If the fuse blows, there is a short circuit in the electric motor, it also needs to be replaced (see below).

If the electric fan test shows that it is working properly, then the cause of the malfunction should be sought in the electrical wiring (see "Checking and repairing electrical circuits") or in the air conditioning control unit (see "Astra climate control unit - checking and replacement" and "Zafira climate control unit - check and replacement").

The electric fan does not work at one or more speeds

1. Prepare the car for work (see "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").

2. Check the additional resistor (see "Electric Fan Booster Resistor - Checking and Replacing").

3. Check the climate control unit (see "Astra climate control unit - checking and replacement" and "Zafira climate control unit - check and replacement").

4. Check the wiring of the electric fan (see "Checking and repairing electrical circuits").
