Technical characteristics of the ignition system «Motronic M 2.5» (Opel Kadett E)

The ignition system is fully electronic, combined into one system with the fuel injection system. The ignition timing is controlled by a single controller for both systems. The ignition system includes a knock sensor, thanks to which the ignition timing for each cylinder is automatically adjusted, providing optimal conditions for fuel combustion. The controller is self-adjusting for operation with gasoline with an octane number from 98 to 95. As a result, the controller's output "46" is shorted to "ground" through a 470 Ohm resistor of the octane corrector pad.

If the knock sensor is faulty, a special safety circuit of the controller is triggered, which shifts the ignition advance angle towards the retardation. If the controller malfunctions, the ignition timing and injection are controlled according to the values set in the self-diagnostic program.

Initial ignition advance angle before TDC: 18-22°.

The ignition distributor with a spark timing sensor is designed only for distributing high voltage current to the spark plugs.
